Book Grants
LBCC Financial Aid has a limited amount of money at the beginning of each semester for helping needy students purchase their textbooks. These funds come from three sources:

Thanks to the late Isabel Patterson, a former Long Beach school teacher and real estate investor, the Patterson Trust is a lasting endowment which provides funds to this program.

The Buy-a-Book Fund is a fundraising activity of the Financial Aid Office staff. A variety of events are sponsored throughout the year to create income for this program, which is matched by a grant from the Long Beach City College Foundation. All money collected goes to help needy students buy textbooks.

The Shirley Klein Fund was created and continues to be maintained by a retired faculty member who worked for many years in the Financial Aid Office and who understands the needs of financial aid students.

Students who will not be receiving their financial aid during the first couple weeks of the semester and have no other means to purchase their books, may ask for assistance in the Financial Aid Office. These funds are administered by the ASB Bookstore and Bank, which requires students who receive them to have a current College Services Card. Depending on the student's circumstances, these funds may be disbursed as book grants (credits in the Bookstore) or as loans. Funds are very limited, so students should apply as early as possible. Because these funds are so limited, students who are receiving financial aid are not eligible.
