Federal Work Study is a campus-based financial aid program. This means that each college participating in the program receives a set amount of money to distribute to its students. FWS is awarded to the "neediest" financial aid students, which means to those students with the lowest income and the highest cost of education. At Long Beach City College, FWS is given to students with a zero EFC, who are not living at home, and who are continuing students until the funds are gone.
Students who receive FWS are assigned to work 20 hours per week at various offices throughout Long Beach City College. Pay is the California minimum wage and students receive their paychecks on the 10th of each month for the hours worked the previous month. Job assignments for new FWS are made in August each year. Students must maintain at least 6 units to receive Federal Work Study.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), plus any additional documentation needed to complete the financial aid application, is required in order to receive FWS. In addition, because the funding of this program is limited, FWS awards are only given to those applicants who have completed their financial aid files by May 1st, the LBCC First Priority Deadline (click on the Dates and Deadlines link to the left for more information about important financial aid dates).
