Satisfactory Progress

Qualitative Requirements
Students are required to complete the units that they attempt (are paid for) and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
At Long Beach City College, the grades of all financial aid students are checked at the end of each semester and summer term. At the end of the fall semester, warning notices are sent to all students who fail to successfully complete the units they attempted and/or have a cumulative GPA under 2.0. In addition, students who complete zero units in fall are suspended from financial aid. Spring loan disbursements are held until all fall grades are checked.
At the end of the spring semester, combined grades from both fall and spring are reviewed. Units attempted are compared to units completed. Students who fail to successfully complete their units attempted, minus a three-unit leeway, are suspended from financial aid. So, too, are students whose cumulative GPA is less than 2.0.
At the end of summer, grades are reviewed for students who receive summer Pell Grant. Summer grades are combined with those of the school year and students are held responsible for completing the total units attempted minus the three unit leeway. In the summer, students who attempt at least three units and who complete zero units are suspended from financial aid.
Completed units are those with grades of A, B, C, D, or CR.
Students who are suspended may make up the missing units or low grades without financial aid or petition for reinstatement.
If needed, click here for a Petition for Reinstatement.
Quantitative Limit.
Financial aid is designed to help needy students achieve their educational goals. It is expected, therefore, that students be making progress toward a degree, a certificate, or a transfer program and when their objective is achieved, financial aid will end.
At Long Beach City College, the financial aid limit is 90 units. Students who have completed more than 60 units, must fill out a Petition for Extention to apply to receive additional aid. Approvals are not automatically granted for students over 90 units or for a second AA/AS degree.
If needed, click here for a Petition for Extension for 2006/07.
Return to Title IV (R2T4).
In addition to the above, students who withdraw from all classes during a semester may have to repay some of the financial aid they received for those classes. It is important for students, therefore, who must drop all their classes to come into the Financial Aid Office and let us know.
At the end of each semester, the withdrawal dates of all financial aid students who withdrew from all their classes are checked. Students who withdrew before the 60% point of the semester are evaluated for repayment. Those who must repay are notified and the amount due must be repaid before further financial aid can be disbursed.
Special Note about the Fee Waiver.
The Board of Governor's Fee Waiver is not affected by these rules and regulations. A student who is suspended from financial aid may still enroll at Long Beach City College and receive a fee waiver, if eligible.
